With the PlayStation 5 planned to launch in less than twelve months, many people are beginning to doubt that large-scale online games will move towards Sony's next-generation platform.
One of these games is Final Fantasy XIV, Square's most popular MMORPG, which currently runs on both PlayStation 4 and PC. Fan Twitter accounts show that at the recent XIV fan party in London, Naoki Yoshida, the game's most popular producer, reportedly said his team is currently working on a PS5 version.
With Final Fantasy XIV just launched its latest major extension, Shadowbringers, the game has a growing and vibrant community and is considered by many to be the second-ranked MMO among Western fans in this category, behind only Warcraft world". The amount of players buying FFXIV Gil shows that Final Fantasy XIV is very popular.
For Final Fantasy MMO, jumping to PlayStation 5 seems like a logical step. Soon after the launch of Sony PlayStation 4, it jumped to Sony's current platform, and the PS3 version closed in 2017.
However, this will not be as simple as a toggle switch. Square will need to build a new server while ensuring that the game's newer console port connects to PS4 and PC via cross-play. For those who want a next-generation upgrade, a migration method is also needed.
Again, we still don't know much about PS5 and how to handle backward compatibility. If it can run the same PS4 client with some extra tips on top, that seems like an easier way Square is pursuing.
Either way, the publisher wants to make sure that the MMO that they publish is available to as many people as possible. Of course, you can buy Final Fantasy XIV Gil at IGGM. As far as I know, their website is doing a 5% discount recently. Come and buy now!
