Diablo 4(opens in a new tab) will feature an open-world Diablo IV Gold, but Blizzard hasn't been clear about what exactly that means. In a brand new interview with IGN(opens in a new tab) Game director Joe Shely and Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson went a bit more in depth about what players can expect when returning to the world of Sanctuary.
"One one of the problems with making 'open' an enormous neon sign, and flashing the sign is that people have that notion of the Breath of Wild kind of, 'Oh, it's completely organic and I can be anywhere and accomplish anything and, eventually, find out the answer for myself'" Fergusson said. "That's not really our story. Our story allows for non-linearity but there is a story. We wanted to have a start middle, a middle, and an end. We wanted to start a certain point, and to finish at a specific place."
Diablo 4 is "more of a branching story," he said, and players are able to select the order they play its major parts--and then play them in different order when replaying for a completely different sort of experience as a result. It is expected that there would also be many opportunities to take on other tasks and not focus on the main story if you want.
"That's the nice thing about the open world. There's lots of side-quests and things are available to you which aren't listed on the gold path" Fergusson said. "And the golden pathway is actually a branching one, you can decide when you want to do the branches and in what order."
