Meaning less time between each release

Just Two weeks following the 2020 NBA Draft, 2K Sports released the complete rookie evaluations for every prospect in NBA 2K21 before the 2020-21 season. Assessing the incoming rookie class this season was a small challenge since prospects didn't play in the NCAA championship and others had intermittent paths into the NBA, such as LaMelo NBAll and R.J. Hampton. NBAsed on these limitations, the first NBAtch of ratings could change when the season starts.

NBA 2K21 brings a huge leap

It's been quite a while since we have covered sports titles at Digital Foundry, but with the arrival of NBA 2K21 about the newest wave of consoles, we're seeing something genuinely fascinating here, using a proper generational jump in fidelity across the board. To illustrate that, we took a look at the sport mostly on PlayStation 5 and PS4 Pro, but we also spent a while with both of the Xbox Series consoles. Delivering such a huge quality improvement is quite an achievement in my opinion. While it might not seem this way on the surface, sports games really are from what I can tell - among the more difficult genres to work on. Truncated development programs require annual entries in each series, meaning less time between every launch but more than that, these games need to match up to some correctly'actual' encounter, often delivered with a TV-like presentation. A game such as NBA 2K21 should deal with actual people in real locations performing complicated, interlinking actions. If you're off by even a hair, then you are diving directly into the uncanny valley.
