How does the Lightning Protection System protects from Lightning Strikes?

Lightning is no more a mystery. We all know it is a sudden burst of energy with a large current ranging from 20kA to 80kA. Above all, we have no control over it.

Lightning wreaks havoc wherever it strikes, from High Rise Buildings to homes, even huts, and from established societies to far remote locations. Wherever it strikes, it leaves behind a trail of destruction, fire, and death.

Though we cannot prevent Lightning, we can protect ourselves and our property from its dangerous impacts. The Lightning Protection System is a great boon to protect us from lightning strikes.

Lightning Protection System comprises Air terminating system/Lightning Arresters, Down Conductors, a network of Chemical Earthing, Surge Protection Devices, and other small accessories required to install the system.

Lightning Arresters used in Lightning Protection Systems are commonly of two types: Conventional Lightning Arresters, and ESE Lightning Arresters.

Lightning Arresters draw/attract lightning striking in the nearby areas towards them and ground it before allowing it to do damage or destruction. The Lightning Arresters attract the Lightning about to strike the nearby area towards them, collect them and through down conductors, transfer it to the earthing network to dissipate the lightning large current. The down conductors and the earthing network provide this large current a Low Impedance Path to soon dissipate this vast current in a fraction of a second into the ground.

In this manner, Lightning gets directed into the ground before having a chance to damage structures, claim human lives, or burn our appliances.

The Surge Protection Device Protects our appliances from the transient voltage Lightning induces in nearby electrical networks.

The Lightning Protection System ideally covers the Structure and the connected services in an earthed and conducting metallic shield/box. It also bonds the connected services at the entrance point into the shield.

Depending upon the extent of protection cover we require from Lightning, the Lightning Protection System is designed and accordingly installed. Lightning Protection levels are of four types: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, & Level 4.

IEC 62305 Part-3 defines principles for the protection of structures and lives, while IEC 62305 Part-4 defines principles for the protection of electronic systems.

IEC 62305 defines a set of Lightning Current Parameters from which protection is desired to reduce damage and consequential loss due to a Lightning Strike.
