What are some successful startups in India, headed by non-IITians?

Startups from the alumni of IIMs and IITs are fad for sure. But there are plenty of successful startups founded by Non IITs and IIMs. A quick look to my phone, and I find out that most of the apps in my phone are founded by those bunch of Non IITs and IIMs.

Quick look at the apps that I have in my mobile

Bookmyshow

I use it to book my movie tickets. To me, it’s highly useful. In fact, to even check which movie is released, I browse Bookmyshow. Nice idea, better execution and perhaps the best service. This was founded by Ashish Hemrajani in 2007 and I learned that in 2014 it was entered the 1000 Cr valuation club.

Goibibo
An avid traveller that I am, Goibibo is my preferred app to book hotels and flights swiftly. Though a part of Ibibo group, this was founded by Sanjay Bhasin (SP Jain) and Vikalp Sahni (NIT Silchar). Though Skyscanner offers competitive rates, the loyalty program by Goibio has me coming back to it. Here’s something interesting about it – Ranked Number 1 mobile app under the travel category.

Goibibo.com
was awarded 'The Best Tech Travel Aggregator Brand Award 2015 by The Economic Times.

Freecharge
It’s hard to believe that this startup was founded in 2010 (almost 8 years back) and it has finally got its due. One of my personal favourites to make online payment (nice offers on cashbacks are alluring) Founded in 2010, FreeCharge is a leading digital payments platform in India founded by Kunal Shah. If we go by the news, it was sold to Snapdeal for a whopping $400 million. This is perhaps the largest deal to date in India’s consumer internet space.

PAYTM
Almost everyone of us went to this app immediately after the note ban in India. It was the vision of Vijay Shekhar Sharma (DTU) made his way to the top with PayTm reaching everyone in the digital world. To make rural India make payment through mobile is quite a task and Paytm pulled it off with ease. Thanks to its efficient and simple way to transfer money. Even Panwaalas have the label-“PayTm Accepted Here”.

OYO

Forget about IITs and IIMs. A highly inspiring story of Ritesh Agarwal is not hidden anymore. A 17 year old wrote his success story with OYO rooms and I invariably reach out to Oyo rooms whenever I travel for work. As far as I know, the average booking rates of the rooms sits around Rs 1,400 to 1,800. Ritesh Agarwal says that their team has delivered a 15X YoY growth with 2.3 million booked room-night transactions in the first quarter of 2016.
