I've seen and read a lot of painting lessons, and one thing that always strikes me is the lack of attention to painting details. I didn't even cover detail in my last tutorial. Should I have done it?
WHY DOESN'T ANYONE TALK ABOUT THE DETAILS?
Details are tedious, to put it bluntly. That seems a little strange, doesn't it? However, this is correct. When it comes to finishing a painting, painting details is a tiresome task, and if you don't have a nice podcast or some fantastic music to listen to, you'll become weary of it quickly. No one wants to sit for hours seeing an artist painstakingly paint every single particle in a rock in a painting tutorial. Obviously, we're talking about realism here, but any painting may be tedious to detail.
In terms of technique, the most significant aspects of a painting for me are composition, values, and color. The last two are crucial components of the composition, so I think it all boils down to that. Clearly ignoring the topic and subject matter. For an example of why these three elements are more important than everything else, look at the photographs below. One image is completely detailed, whereas the other only contains the compositional elements.
WHY IS DETAIL IMPORTANT IF IT IS NOT IMPORTANT?
Let's move on to why detail is important now that we've gotten beyond why no one talks about it and why it isn't. Are you still with me?
Detail can be used to great advantage as a compositional element. It's all about contrast in composition and how to make the most significant portions of the painting stand out. Disregard the value, the color, and the linework. Just pay attention to the details. What's the last thing you've got? It's all in the details. So, what is it that stands out? Nothing is the solution. Consider a small area with a lot of detail surrounded by big areas with little detail., known as resting points. You see where I'm going with this.
I've shown various areas of detail and resting spots. The blue sections are resting spots, whereas the red portions are the most comprehensive and provide the most information about my character. It's crucial to contrast a detailed area with an un-detailed area. As a result, when your values, color, and detail are all contrasting, your viewer's eye is drawn to the focus point.
A SUGGESTION ON COLOR TEMPERATURE
While we're on the subject, here's some information about color temperature. Due to atmospheric perspective, cool colors retreat while warm colors advance. As a result, if you need to paint a far item in a warm color, such as red, the color will desaturate as it gets further away. As I mentioned in my last post, rules are meant to be broken, so don't feel obligated to follow them religiously.
FINAL CONCLUSIONS
Make sure you pay attention to where you're putting detail and that you're using a reference to figure out how it should look. Oh, and don't go too far! These details reflect Our original art online by the artist in Miami.
