Path of Exile 2's patch 0.5.0, Return of the Ancients, is set to go live on Friday, May 29 at 4 p.m. EDT, and that's the date most players should circle if they're searching for the so-called season 5 release date. The update lands with Runes of Aldur, a fresh league, and a free weekend that lets more people jump in without an Early Access key. If you're sorting stash tabs, checking filters, or pricing PoE2 Items before launch, it's worth knowing that this isn't just a small balance pass. Fate of the Vaal ends right before the patch arrives, and its characters move into Standard Early Access or Hardcore Early Access. Grinding Gear Games has also said there won't be wipes, so your old characters aren't being thrown away.
Launch timing and access
The confirmed launch time converts to 1 p.m. PDT, 5 p.m. BRT, 9 p.m. BST, and 10 p.m. CEST on Friday, May 29. For Japan and eastern Australia, that means early Saturday: 5 a.m. JST and 6 a.m. AEST on May 30. The free weekend runs until Monday, June 1 at 4 p.m. EDT, at least for Windows PC and Xbox Series X in the available information. Progress made during the event is saved, which is handy if you're trying the game for the first time. What we don't have yet is the practical server stuff. No firm maintenance start, no downtime length, no preload time, no patch size, and no clear queue opening time.
A clearer endgame path
The big pitch for Return of the Ancients is the endgame. Not just one new boss, not a couple of extra maps, but a reworked path into the Atlas. After the campaign, players should run into storylines that introduce older league mechanics and push them toward weaker versions of pinnacle bosses. That matters. A lot of newer players hit endgame and then sort of drift, because the goal isn't always obvious. This patch seems aimed at fixing that. Jonathan Rogers has been cited as saying the team wanted players to have a goal and a finish line. That doesn't mean the full pinnacle grind is gone. It means there's a more readable road before you get there.
Runes, ascendancies, and build questions
Runes of Aldur is the new league tied to patch 0.5.0, and rune crafting looks like one of its main hooks. The sources point to Aldur's Legacy and unique item runes, but the fine print is still missing. We don't know the drop rules, socket rules, failure states, trade limits, or whether unique item runes can touch corrupted gear. Two new ascendancies are also coming: Spiritwalker and Martial Artist. They're the main new build toys, since the patch doesn't add new base classes or weapon categories. Still, players should be careful. Teaser names like Tame Beast, Twister, Bellshatter, and Kalguuran skills are floating around, but the confirmed node text and scaling numbers aren't available here.
Balance changes players should verify
A fair bit of patch chatter is coming from video coverage, and that's where players need to slow down. Passive tree changes are expected, including Armour and Evasion hybrid clusters, and Subterfuge Mask has been mentioned as a nerf target. There's also talk about Gravebind, Magic Find, increased item rarity farming, Acolyte of Chayula, Ancestral Bond Totems, and minion buffs. Some of it may be right. Some of it may be incomplete. Without official text, it's risky to build your whole league plan around a title or chapter name. The same goes for item-filter topics like Two-Stone Rings, Flux, Facebreaker, and Auspex. They're worth watching, but not worth treating as settled facts.
What to do before May 29
If you're returning for the patch, keep expectations grounded. Your Fate of the Vaal characters should survive the league migration, but the new league will be where most of the early action happens. If you're brand new, the free weekend is a decent way to test the game without paying first. If you're planning a serious league start, don't lock in Spiritwalker, Martial Artist, or rune-crafting plans until real numbers are available. Update your filters, check official notes, and keep some flexibility in your first build. The players who adapt fastest, especially around PoE2 gear changes and endgame progression, will have a much smoother first week.Welcome to U4GM, your friendly stop for Path of Exile 2 news, league prep, and smart item support.
