One of the problems of counting calories without specific eating guidelines is that many people will have a high calorie meal early on, and reach their calorie limit for the day. These people may not know it, but they are telling their body it's starving. When the body is in starvation mode, it starts to store as many calories as possible. So even though you may be eating fewer calories, you are actually storing more calories because you still aren't eating correctly.
